Overview
At ETC, we have a long-standing relationship with Cannon Bono – a company dedicated to the design, manufacturing, installation, service and maintenance of industrial boilers.
Working together we facilitate the seamless integration of advanced combustion systems. Having previously installed a similar system in China, Cannon Bono were confident that we provide stable solutions for complex fuel scenarios.
This project saw us collaborate with Cannon Bono once again to deliver a bespoke burner control solution for a major chemical company specialising in the production of N-Methyl-1-pyrrolidone (NMP) – a vital component of Lithium batteries.
The project
In early 2023, Cannon Bono needed to provide their client with thermal oil heaters for use in the chemical production process for NMP.
Sustainability and cost-efficiency were top priorities for the end user and they required a thermal heating solution capable of utilising its Hydrogen (H2) byproduct as a primary fuel source while maintaining operational flexibility and safety. The client wanted to reduce operational costs and their carbon footprint by leveraging hydrogen byproduct.
The solution
To achieve the goals of the client, Cannon Bono supplied two OMP thermal oil heaters with a capacity of 7MW each. These systems are designed to utilise a Burner Management System (BMS) which is where we came in.
We supplied the ETC6009 Burner Control System (BCS) which was integrated into Cannon Bono’s two OMP thermal oil heaters. The ETC6009 was specifically chosen for its proven ability to handle dual-fuel blended firing combustion scenarios, offering precise control and unparalleled reliability.
Our solution was incorporated into Cannon Bono’s proprietary Optispark F3 technology for advanced combustion and boiler control, ensuring seamless integration and optimal performance. The thermal oil heaters provided the heat necessary for the NMP production process – a process in which Hydrogen is generated as a byproduct.
The result
The system was configured to burn alongside natural gas and the ETC6009 allows the system to operate with any hydrogen to natural gas ratio, from pure hydrogen to pure natural gas,
providing the flexibility needed to optimise fuel use. This capability significantly reduces waste, maximises resource utilisation and cuts down on operation costs by leveraging the end users’ own Hydrogen byproduct.
A major highlight of the project was its alignment with the sustainability goals of the end user. By enabling the efficient use of the Hydrogen byproduct as a fuel source, the system significantly reduced waste and the dependency on natural gas, lowering the carbon footprint of the production process. The installation also addressed the technical challenge of safely managing dual fuel combustion, ensuring high efficiency and safety regardless of the fuel mix.
The project was completed on schedule in 2023 and the successful integration of the ETC6009 and the Optispark F3 with the thermal oil heaters reinforced ETC’s and Cannon Bono’s reputation for delivering tailored solutions that address complex industrial challenges.
The project stands as a testament to ETC’s and Cannon Bono’s partnership which combine innovation, reliability, and environmental responsibility. Through this partnership, together we provided a cutting-edge solution that optimises operational efficiency while supporting the end users sustainability objectives.
Working with ETC
Cannon Bono chose to work with ETC because of our strong, proven experience and previous successful installations.
Mario Caporali, Sales and Marketing Manager from Cannon Bono commented:
“ETC’s reputation for delivering reliable solutions in complex fuel environments, combined with their flexibility in managing multiple fuel types, made them an ideal choice for this project.
Our existing relationship with ETC mean we could ensure a smooth and seamless integration of the BMS with our solution. The ability of their solution to manage different fuels made their technology a clear choice for this project.”
